The Meme-ing of Life
Saturday Jul 14, 2018
Saturday Jul 14, 2018
Kids these days and their memes! They're all around us, but what do they mean? Why are they everywhere, and why are they funny? We chat with Tobin about how they work as a form of communication, as a form of social commentary, and as a form of art, following in the footsteps of Dadaism. Going beyond, in fact, when looking at the 2016 American election, and how public opionion expressed itself. How far do memes go? Do they go too far? Listen, and weigh in!

REVIEW: C.G.Jung's "Psychology & Religion"
Tuesday Jul 03, 2018
Tuesday Jul 03, 2018
Carl Jung, one of the founders of the feild of psychology, had written several works exploring the concept of religion. What was it, from a psychological standpoint, and how should one address its functioning in a patient? In this book, the reader not only gets some insight into his opinions on that, but a snapshot at 1930s Europe and the state of Christianity as Protestantism became increasingly splintered and atheism became more and more the norm.
You can purchase the book on Amazon, or at Thrift Books.

Emily (aka @djmeatdaddy) is back with the tequila-soaked sequel to a whirlwind tour of what the WWE means on the modern socio-economic stage, particularly when it comes to trashtalk! (part 1 can be found here). We talk about the optimal condiments for pouring on wrestlers, how a good heel really twists the knife in, and why BudLight should employ koalas. Thrill as we wonder about the finer points of Mike's Hard Lemonade, the crowd control prowess of The Rock, and the importance of the trash-talking assistant. We even discuss the circus-sideshow-style origins of bare-knuckle boxing, and the future of the WWE in politics. This is the episode where we unequivocally proove that wrestling is real.
Referred to in this episode were:
- Bret Kessler's comedy stand-up about accidently joining the mob
- The Bugs Bunny episode of "Bewitched Bunny"
- Brok Lesner being a growing boy
- the spectaular spectacle of Golddust
- the Comedy not-classic "Super Big Product Fun Show"

Grab your furry and scaly friends to join us for drinks this week with Camille as we discuss animal behavior and cognition! How exactly can you define intelligence, and to what degree can human behavior be considered distinctly human? From birds who teach their offspring to use tools to insects that farm fungi and raise other insects as livestock, there is no easy definition to anything in the animal kingdom! And, yes, we make sure to touch on my favorite subject, death, with elephant mourning practices.

404 Religion Not Found
Friday Feb 02, 2018
Friday Feb 02, 2018
Is a lack of a God the basis for a religion? This week we tackle that very question over drinks with Meag! We get into everything from the myths of atheism, the history of it, and the various tenents. What is, actually, the difference between a philosophy and a religion? Can one have religion without God? And how much of *this* particular philosophy is misunderstood, and how much does it have in common with other forms of spirituality?
Books &c Mentioned this episode were...
the Thomas Jefferson version of the Bible
Richard Dawkins' "The God Delusion"
Joseph Campbell's "Godesses: Mysteries of the Feminine Divine"
the infamous Stephen Fry interview where he lambasts God
Pierre Chodelos de Laclos' "Dangerous Liaisons"
NOTE:
The Drunk Host must be corrected by the Sober Editor, becuse Robespierre was, in fact, an impassioned advocate of the Cult of the Supreme Being (Culte de l'Être Suprême), while the Cult of Reason (Culte de la Raison) was a rival state religion pushed by the like of Fouche and Herbert.

From John Cena to Catullus, from ancient Greece to the WWE, join us this week as we have a few drinks with Emily about the incredibly homoerotic world of wrestling (and shit-talking)! In this part one of two, we cover the industry standards of schtick, appropriating culture, and pecking orders (complete with chickens)!
NOTE: The wrestler I couldn't remember the name of during this episode was Damarchus (some translations call him Damaenetus). I had quoted the wrong book, though in Man Into Wolf Dr Eiser makes several mentions back to a text which would go into the Arcadian wolf-cult in more detail, it is in Dennis Hughes’ Human Sacrifice in Ancient Greece that the specific wrestler is mentioned.
The Blink 182 music video mentioned can be found here, and the chicken video mentioned can be found here.

From Batman Jesus to nothing-is-sacred Deadpool, to the intricate fan-theories worlds of Lord of the Rings and Star Trek, this week Drinks with God is boldly over-analyizing the histories and fandoms of a variety of geek cultures with Michael Nixon, host to many podcasts including Having a Friend for Dinner. Have a drink with us as we debate Marvel vs DC! Be amazed as we linger on derivitive tangets! And listen in awe as we conclude what the 90s really did for comics once and for all, before man, god, and the NSA.

Tuesday Dec 19, 2017
Join us at Otto's Shrunken Head for a drink with Zev to talk about the intersectionality between gay culture and witch culture. We might barely scrape the tip of the iceberg, but we still get pretty deep into the theory on what it means to reclaim the beastly idea of being a monster in the eyes of society when finding your own personal power.
The books referenced in this episode were:
- "Gay Shame" by David Halperin (Amazon & ThriftBooks)
- "Witches Sluts and Feminists" by Kristen J Sollee (Amazon & ThriftBooks)
- "Season of the Witch" by David Talbot (Amazon & ThriftBooks)
- "From Here to Eternity" Caitlyn Doughty (Amazon & ThriftBooks)
- "The Creative Habit" Twyla Tharpe (Amazon & ThriftBooks)
If you want to find out more about Zev and their work, you can follow them on Twitter, or follow their film's Twitter, and definitely check out thier website to get updates on their animation work.
